About ASI
The Astronomical Society of India (ASI) was founded in 1972 with the aim of fostering the growth of astronomy and astrophysics in India. Headquartered in Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India, ASI serves as a premier professional body for astronomers, researchers, educators, and enthusiasts across the country.
Over the decades, ASI has played a pivotal role in advancing astronomical research through collaborations with national and international institutions. Our society brings together experts from diverse fields such as observational astronomy, theoretical astrophysics, cosmology, and space science to share knowledge and drive innovation.
ASI organizes annual meetings, workshops, and conferences that attract participants from around the globe. These events provide a platform for presenting cutting-edge research, discussing emerging trends, and networking with peers. The society also publishes the "Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy," a peer-reviewed journal that features high-quality research papers.
Our membership includes over 3,000 professionals and students from universities, research institutes, and amateur astronomy clubs. ASI is committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in astronomy, encouraging women and underrepresented groups to pursue careers in STEM fields.
In addition to research, ASI actively engages in public outreach programs. We believe that astronomy is for everyone, and we strive to make the wonders of the universe accessible to the general public through star parties, telescope observations, and online resources.
As we look to the future, ASI aims to leverage India's growing space capabilities, such as the ISRO missions, to further astronomical discoveries. We are also expanding our educational initiatives to inspire the next generation of astronomers and scientists.

Our Mission
To advance the science of astronomy and astrophysics in India through research, education, and public engagement. We aim to create a vibrant community that fosters collaboration, innovation, and knowledge dissemination.
ASI is dedicated to supporting astronomers at all career stages, from students to seasoned professionals. We provide grants, awards, and fellowships to encourage groundbreaking research and recognize excellence in the field.
We also focus on building infrastructure for astronomical observations, including promoting the use of telescopes and data archives. Our mission extends to advocating for dark sky preservation to minimize light pollution and protect observational sites.
Through partnerships with government agencies, educational institutions, and industry, we strive to integrate astronomy into national science policies and curricula. Our goal is to make India a global leader in astronomical research and technology.
Our Vision
To inspire a society where astronomy is recognized as a fundamental science that enriches human understanding of the universe. We envision a future where every individual has the opportunity to explore the cosmos and contribute to astronomical discovery.
ASI aims to establish India as a hub for international astronomical collaborations, hosting major observatories and research facilities. We seek to drive innovations in telescope technology, data analysis, and space missions that push the boundaries of knowledge.
We also aspire to cultivate a culture of scientific curiosity and critical thinking through astronomy education. By developing accessible resources and training programs, we hope to empower educators and students across the country.
Ultimately, our vision is to harness the power of astronomy to address global challenges, promote sustainability, and unite people across cultures through the shared wonder of the night sky.
Events & Activities
ASI organizes a wide range of events throughout the year to engage the astronomy community and the public. Here are some highlights:
Annual ASI Conference
The flagship event of ASI, held every January, brings together astronomers from India and abroad. The conference features plenary talks, parallel sessions, poster presentations, and exhibitions. Topics span from solar physics to extragalactic astronomy. The 2024 conference will be hosted by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore, with expected attendance of over 500 delegates.
Keynote speakers include Nobel laureates and leading researchers. The conference also includes workshops on data analysis, grant writing, and career development. It's an excellent opportunity for networking and collaboration.

Public Star Parties
Monthly star parties are held at various locations across India, especially during clear skies. These events allow the public to observe celestial objects through telescopes, guided by ASI volunteers. Popular targets include the Moon, planets, star clusters, and nebulae. We also organize meteor shower watching sessions and lunar eclipse events.
In 2023, we hosted over 50 star parties, reaching more than 10,000 participants. Our mobile planetarium program visits schools and rural areas to bring astronomy to underserved communities. These activities foster scientific literacy and wonder.

Research Workshops
ASI conducts specialized workshops on topics like gravitational wave astronomy, exoplanet detection, and radio astronomy. These hands-on sessions are designed for researchers and graduate students to enhance their skills. Recent workshops have covered data from Indian observatories like the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and AstroSat.
Upcoming workshops include "Machine Learning in Astrophysics" and "Solar Observation Techniques." Participants receive certificates and access to online resources. These workshops are often supported by grants from government science agencies.
